The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has completed the Phase I of the underground Malabar Hill-Cross Maidan sea tunnel project.
The 3.6-km Malabar Hill-Cross Maidan tunnel project consists of two phases - Phase I comprises the 1.8 km underground sea tunnel from S K Patil Garden to Khilachand Garden (Band Stand, Girgaum) and Phase II comprises the 1.75 km underground tunnel from Cross Maidan to S K Patil Garden.
The entire project entailing a cost of Rs 156 crore, funded under the Centre's Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission is being executed by Patel Pratibha JV.
The second phase of Cross Maidan to S K Patil Garden underground tunnel is slated to be completed January 2010.
The tunnel will rehabilitate and upgrade the conveyance and water distribution system from Cross Maidan to Malabar hill and connect it to the existing system to strengthen the water supply to the South Mumbai region.
