The upgradation and improvement of the drainage and sewerage systems in Kolkata may cost around Rs 20,000 crore, which is likely to be taken up in phases.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has already mobilised Rs 2,500 crore through internal accruals and an additional Rs 2,500 crore of loan is awaited from the Asian Development Bank. Under the Kolkata Environment Improvement Project (KEIP), the KMC has launched a wide range of infrastructure development projects, including improvement of sewerage facilities.
