The Kolkata Municipal Corporation's (KMC) Phase II of a sewerage and drainage improvement programme under the Kolkata Environment Improvement Project (KEIP) is likely to cost Rs 2,500 crore.
Work on Phase II is likely to begin in the next fiscal which will provide improved sewerage and related amenities in parts of Kolkata that were left out in Phase I. KEIP is likely to seek funds from the Union Government under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission for the project.
Phase I of the project is likely be delayed by only a few months from its revised completion deadline of December 2010. Out of the Rs 1,806 crore estimated investment in Phase I, Rs 700 crore has already been invested. Nearly 66 per cent of the sewerage and drainage work and 50 per cent of the overall work is already complete.
