Tourism Malaysia steps up efforts to make Malaysia a preferred tourist destination

Malaysia’s Minister of Tourism, Dato' Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen is holding a week-long meeting (July 12-18, 2009) to step up efforts to make Malaysia a preferred tourist destination, particularly during the current economic and health crisis. The Minister of Tourism will be holding the meeting with 43 overseas directors and marketing officers of Tourism Malaysia. The meeting will review the industry’s current performance, on-going promotional efforts, as well as future worldwide marketing strategies and activities. In addition to the meeting, overseas tourism officers will also be having sessions on the Malaysia My Second Home and Homestay programmes. YBhg Dato, Acting Director General and Amirrudin Abu, Director of International Promotion, Tourism Malaysia will also be discussing Tourism Malaysia and Key Performance Indicator and strategic directions.

Tourist arrivals to Malaysia increased by 2.6 per cent during the first five months of 2009 compared to the same period last year i.e. from 9001765 in 2008 to 9238116 in 2009. Regional markets that have continued to show growth were ASEAN, West Asia, Oceania and Europe while markets in China, Japan and South Korea registered a decline.
