The empowerment committee of the ministry of textiles has approved the setting up of an integrated textile park at Ludhiana, Punjab, three years after the project was announced. The proposal had been forwarded to the Centre for approval in 2005.
A senior official of Ludhiana Integrated Textile Park Ltd told Projectmonitor, "We have acquired about 60 acres near Doraha and the Punjab government has waived stamp duty for the land. The Centre will grant us Rs 40 crore for infrastructure development in the Rs 1,500-crore investment planned, including the land purchase, and installment of machinery and infrastructure. The rest will be received from industries which will set up their units. We are planning to set up 80 units of knitwear and textile industries in the park."
The units that will form part of the park are Oster Knitwears, Palta Hosiery, Priknit, Nagpal Hosiery and Sarjeevan Knitwears, among others. The project will also have other facilities like better roads, lights, effluent treatment plant, sewerage, storm water drainage, captive power plant, trade centre, and research and development centre. "Once we receive the approval, we will plan the capacity of the power plant," the official said.
Work on the textile park is expected to start by April-end and will be implemented for a period of 12 months. "We have plans to expand the park by purchasing more land. Once the procedure is complete, the park will provide employment to about 1.2 lakh people," the official added.
