The Karnataka Government is likely to develop a 300 km steel corridor in the Hospet area in eastern Karnataka.

A lot of companies like NMDC, Tata Steel, JSW, and Brahmani have evinced interest in the proposed project. The idea is that each steel manufacturer could erect a manufacturing unit of at least two million tonne.

Currently, infrastructure work, like identification of 500 sq km of land for an industrial park is in the process for the proposed corridor. Tenders for infrastructure development related works are likely to be invited by October 2009. Work is already on for a 120 km rail link between Hubli and Ankola in the region. The industrial park is likely to attract Rs 20,000 crore of investment, which will also have a township.

Moreover, the state government is contemplating a nuclear power unit in the corridor. It has given its recommendation to Atomic Energy Commission for the nuclear plant at Tadri. The government is also promoting a port at Tadri, on the western coast.
