The Maharashtra Government has cancelled Videocon's proposed 2,000 acre multi-product SEZ at Wagholi, about 30 km from Pune.
In 2007, Videocon had proposed the joint development, with the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), of a multi-product SEZ spread across the four villages of Lonikand, Kesnand, Bokar and Wagholi.
The MIDC had, as a first step in the land acquisition process, issued a notification in May 2007 but faced opposition from land owners. Moreover, in October 2007, in-principle approval by Videocon for an SEZ ran out of the year’s time limit given for land acquisition and did not apply for an extension.
