To curb ill legal constructions in Chennai, 17 buildings will be demolished. Most of the structures are located in the Basin Bridge, Pulianthope zones, Nungambakkam and Ice House. The owners had obtained permission to construct the ground and first floors from the town planning wing of the local body but actually built three or more floors violating the development control rules of the Town and Country Planning Act.
These structures were built after the ordinance of the state government promulgated on July 27, 2007, preventing demolition of unauthorised structures till that date. Meanwhile, official sources said that more demolitions could be expected in the coming months since the Madras high court was cracking the whip on unauthorised buildings these days. On a PIL, the court wanted the hawking committee chairman A Ramamoorthy to find out whether on the date of fire accident in T Nagar, the two unfortunate victims could not be rescued due to inadequacy of space to enable firefighters to function efficiently.
