France-based Systra and India’s RITES have secured a contract from the Indian Railways to conduct the feasibility study for running air-conditioned trains along the 60-km long Churchgate-Virar route in Mumbai.
The consortium will submit the report, including design, cost and fare structure, by June 2009. Besides the Virar-Churchgate route, the consortium will also examine the possibility of extending the elevated corridor further from Mantralaya and Nariman Point to CST. The study will mainly focus on locating suitable sites to erect pillars for the elevated corridor. The project is likely to be executed on a PPP model.
Once the feasibility study is over, the Railways will appoint financial and legal consultants for the project.
