The MMRDA has awarded the Mumbai Metro Line II project on 29 July 2009 to a conglomerate led by Reliance Infrastructure (R-Infra) alongwith SNC-Lavalin Group (Canada) and Reliance Infocomm.
The 32-km long Mumbai Metro Line II is to be constructed from Charkop to Mankhurd via Bandra with completion slated for 2012. The proposed stretch is likely to have 27 stations.
The Line II of Metro, to be built on a PPP model, is entitled to a maximum grant of Rs 3,064 crore, or 40 per cent of the project cost, from the Union and Maharashtra Government. Of this, the Union Government has approved Rs 1,532 crore towards viability gap funding. R-Infra is likely to invest Rs 5,952 crore while MMRDA will pay the rest sum of Rs 766 crore. Work on the project is expected to begin within one year.
In May 2009, R-Infra led consortium emerged as the sole bidder for the metro rail project.
