The Power Finance Corporation has issued the LoI to Anil Ambani-led Reliance Power for awarding the 4,000 MW ultra mega power project (UMPP) at Tilaiya in Jharkhand on 13 February 2009.

Reliance Power has emerged as the lowest bidder for the Tilaiya UMPP, for which the financial bids were opened on 28 January 2009. The UMPP project to be developed on a debt equity ratio of 70:30, will have an investment cost between Rs.16,000 - 18,000 crore. The Tilaiya project will get its coal from a captive mine that will also be developed by the power project bidder. The coal mine is estimated to have reserves of 972 million tonne.

This is the third UMPP to be bagged by Reliance Power. It has already been awarded the Sasan (Madhya Pradesh) and Krishnapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) projects.
