A power transmission project to connect the North-East with the rest of the country has been delayed because PGCIL is yet to award major contracts for the project.
While orders for setting up of transmission links for the project have been awarded, orders for the three terminals that convert electricity from alternating current to direct current and vice-versa are yet to be placed. The order value for the terminals is around Rs 4,500 crore.
The project involves setting up a transmission corridor with an investment of around Rs 11,000 crore. The high-voltage direct current lines tendered will have a capacity to withstand variations of surge and decline in power transmission of the order of 800 kV. This 2,000 km link will also reduce transmission losses.
