The Union Government has finalised Dhamra in Bhadrak district and the coastal village of Astaranga in Orissa for setting up the ultra mega power projects (UMPPs).
A team of experts from the Central Electricity Authority and Power Finance Corporation (PFC) identified the two sites after examining five possible sites located near the coast in the state. The five sites are Kirtaniya in Balasore district, Dhamra in Bhadrak, Paradip in Jagatsinghpur, Astaranga in Puri and Ganja in Ganjam district.
The Dhamra Port Corporation Ltd (DPCL), a JV company between Tata Steel and L&T, is setting up a port at Dhamra while the CVR Navayuga Group plans to set up a 60 million tonne cargo handling capacity port at Astaranga with an investment of Rs 6,000 crore in three phases.
According to sources, DPCL and the Navayuga Group have no objection to the UMPPs coming up near their ports. The two UMPPs with 4,000 MW capacity each are to be developed through SPVs promoted by PFC with a proposed investment of Rs 32,000 crore.
