The Chennai International Terminals Pvt Ltd (CITPL), the second private container terminal at the Chennai port has known to have started trial operations. However, the official opening of the terminal is slated for October 2009.

The new terminal began trial operations with 480 mtrs of quay length; three quay cranes and ten rubber-tyred-gantry cranes. The full 832 mtrs of quay length is expected to be completed by October 2009. The proposed terminal is jointly operated by PSA International, Singapore and Sical Logistics, Chennai.

The Chennai Port Trust has signed a concession agreement with CITPL to convert the existing facility into the second container terminal through private sector participation for a licence period of 30 years. The planned terminal capacity is 1.05 million TEUs.
