The Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) has invited EoIs from eligible entities for creation of port facilities at Sagar Island, located at the confluence of the Hugli river and the Bay of Bengal and around 47 km away from Haldia Dock Complex.
The project is to be implemented in the PPP mode, as a BOT project with revenue-sharing. It is expected to cost Rs 660 crore.
Sagar Island's draft is 10 mtrs. It is some 82 km away from Sand Heads, the navigational channel from where ships have to be 'piloted' to Kolkata Port, India's only riverine port.
The project is likely to require about 250 acre which will be acquired by KoPT. It will have three jetties with facilities for handling dry bulk cargo like coal and iron ore as well as containers.
