Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, is expected to inaugurate the Gangavaram port in Visakhapatnam district on 12 July 2009, almost a year after it started functioning.
The port has five berths in the Phase I built at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore. Mechanised handling facilities have been installed at the port which is capable of receiving capsize vessels of 2,00,000 deadweight tonne.
The port has already handled 4-5 million tonne of cargo and during the current fiscal it is expected to handle 13-15 million tonne of cargo.
