Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd’s Mangalore LPG import facility now boasts of renewed energy savings and the ministry of petroleum and natural gas has asked other oil companies to also implement similar energy-saving models. MLIF is located on 176 acres near Mangalore, Karnataka.
According to HPCL officials, the Mangalore LPG import facility is a part of the company's energy conservation initiative. The facility uses non-conventional energy sources like solar energy, LPG recovery plant, water harvesting and windmill. Under MLIF, 16 solar lights along with solar heaters have been installed, resulting in a net savings of Rs 1.15 lakh per annum. High chimneys for DG set exhausts to lower pollution levels around the terminal and a water effluent treatment plant have also been installed.
An LPG vent line modification project to save residual LPG from wagon loading arms is being implemented at the railway wagon gantry. This is expected to help save LPG worth Rs 80 lakh per annum.
On the cards are plans to improve efficiency of LPG pumps and air compressors through planned inspection, overhauling and replacement of high-power sodium vapour lamps on high-mast lighting towers with energy-efficient MH lights, which will also result in huge energy savings.
Commissioned in October 1996, the Mangalore LPG import facility caters to domestic and non-domestic LPG demand of HPCL, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd in south India.
