Construction work of a barrage across river Cauvery at Mayanur in Karur district of Tamil Nadu is on track. The project is estimated to entail an investment of Rs 189 crore.

The barrage is expected to be 1,233 mtrs long with a water storage height of 4.90 mtrs with 86 vents and 12 scour vents. The barrage is to double up as a bridge linking the left and right banks of the river, shortening the distance between the nearest points by about 45 km.

The aim of the project is to increase the irrigation management capacity of the South Bank Canal, Kattalai High Level Channel, New Kattalai High Level Channel and the Krishnarayapuram Channel. The project is to be completed by February 2011.
