The Union Government has approved a Rs 1,194 crore contribution for the establishment of the South Asian University.

This is about 79 per cent of the total cost of the project. Around 100 acre is being acquired by the Ministry of External Affairs from the Delhi Development Authority next to the Indira Gandhi National Open University, for leasing to the university.

The government is expected to spend Rs 45 crore in the first tranche to ensure that the university is operational by July-August 2010. It is expected to be a non-state, non-profit self- governing international educational institution.
