Sharp fall in fresh investment announcements

Number of new projects announcement dropped sharply in October 2008. ProjectsToday gathered information on 901 new projects entailing a total investment of Rs.29,693 crore. Compared with the 1,353 new projects worth Rs.79,626 crore monitored in September 2008 the October figures indicates a declines of 33.4 per cent and 62.7 per cent  in terms of number of projects and investment planned therein respectively.

Of the total projects announced during October 2008, 593 projects entailing a total investment of Rs.18,124 crore were by the State and Central government agencies. Private entities accounted for the balance 308 projects worth Rs.11,569 crore.

Among the major sectors, the manufacturing sector registered the sharpest fall both in number of projects and fresh investments. As against 180 projects worth Rs.25,080 crore announced in September 2008, only 79 projects worth Rs.3,408 crore were announced in October. Baring sugar, steel and cement sectors no other sectors within the manufacturing sector saw announcement of large projects.

Both Services and Power sector received half of the total fresh investment they managed to attract in September 2008. Thanks to a couple of mega roadway projects announced by the governments of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, Services sector managed to attract the highest fresh investment among the major sectors.

As against 27 new power projects worth Rs.21,234 crore announced in September 2008, only 22 new projects worth Rs.9,775 crore were announced in October. Of these the five large size projects were:

•    Jindal Steel & Power’s 2,400 MW (3 x 800 MW) coal based power unit near Sarsajal village in Dumka district of Jharkhand.
•    SRM Energy’s 2,000 MW coal based power unit in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu.
•    Krishnapatnam Power Corpn’s 1,980 MW coal based power unit at Krishnapatnam in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.
•    Gagan Power, O P Jindal Group company’s super thermal power unit with a capacity of 1,600 MW to 1,680 MW (2 x 800 MW + 5 per cent) near Sarsajal village in Dumka district of Jharkhand.
•    Moser Baer Power & Infrastructures’ 1,320 MW coal based power unit at Lara, Pusour in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh.

Among the sub-sectors of the Manufacturing sector, sugar industry saw the announcement of 13 new projects with an aggregate capacity of 33,500 tccpd including expansion projects. Karnataka was the largest beneficiary of this new announcement as eight of the 13 new sugar projects are located in the state. The largest investment proposal was announced by Bireshwara Sugars for setting up a  4,000 tccpd sugar plant along with distillery unit with a capacity of 100 klpd and 30 MW co-generation power unit in Belgaum district of Karnataka, at an investment of Rs.415 crore.

In the Construction sector, around 43 new commercial complexes including shopping malls,14 new hotels and 19 new hospitals were announced across India. In addition, ProjectsToday collected information on 197 Real Estate projects, which were at different stages of development. Among the large scale Real Estate projects announced in October 2008, the biggest was Provident Housing and Infrastructure’s housing project being developed over 50 lakh sq. ft , comprising 4,800 houses with multiple modern amenities.

The month also saw Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India announcing the following projects with a total investment of Rs.182 crore:
•    A resort at Theog in Shimla in Himachal Pradesh comprising 150 rooms, restaurant, conference hall, health club
•    A resort at Tungi near Lonavla in the Nashik district of Maharashtra comprising 158 rooms and a restaurant
•    Expansion of a resort at Ashtamudi in Kollam district of Kerala by constructing 40 additional rooms along with a restaurant, conference hall and a swimming pool.
•    Expansion of 'Club Mahindra Kodagu Valley' resort at Coorg in Kodagu district of Karnataka by constructing 34 additional apartments, another swimming pool.
ProjectsToday also collected information on eight SEZs:
•    Maharashtra Industrial Devp. Corpn’s agro processing SEZ in Akola, Maharashtra
•    Ajanta Projects India’s Biotechnology SEZ in Aurangabad, Maharashtra
•    Cognizant Technology Solutions India’s IT/ITES SEZ at Adibatla in Andhra Pradesh
•    Ittina Properties’ IT/ITES SEZ at Bagur in Bangalore
•    DLF’s IT/ITES SEZ at Gandhinagar in Gujarat
•    Aqualine Properties’ IT/ITES SEZ at Gandhinagar in Gujarat
•    Tata Consultancy Services’ IT/ITES SEZ at New Town in Kolkata
•    QuEST SEZ Devp.’s Precision Engineering SEZ at Belgaum in Karnataka.

Major MoU signed during the month: On 10 October 2008, Tata Motors signed an MoU with Government of Gujarat for setting up the small car ‘Nano’ project with a capacity to manufacture  2.5 lakh cars per annum at Sanand in Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

Foundation stones laid during the month: Around 19 foundation stones for various projects from the Service sector including mainly hospitals, roadways and schools were laid in Delhi.
