The building of the La Grace corsair ship, the largest Czech sailing boat, started in Suez, Egypt with a keel laying ceremony Monday, Daniel Rosecky, co-author of the project. The replica of a 32-metre-long two-mast sailing boat from the second part of the 18th century will serve as a training ship for those interested in yachting and marina skills, Rosecky said. After many years of preparations the dream of several enthusiasts from the LaGrace association who also finance the project has started coming true. The boat will be built at an Egyptian professional shipyard where wooden ships are built with practically the same instruments as in the 18th century.
Instead of electric planes hand planes are used there, for instance. The ship should resemble its historical model as much as possible. La Grace will not only be the largest Czech sailing boat but probably also the largest Czech war ship. As a real corsair boat it will be equipped with replicas of historical cannons. The boat will be set afloat in a year.
