Soilmec India, a leading drilling and foundation equipment company based in Mumbai, is in the process of investing Rs 2 crore on its operations in India that includes machinery and training as well as expansion. The company, which is engaged in the design, manufacture and distribution of equipment for the ground engineering industry, launched its indigenously manufactured desander, a type of drilling rig equipment, at Excon 2009 in Bangaluru, Karnataka. The company also launched Soilmec Rig SR-40 upgraded with a pull-down winch. Soilmec, which started its Indian operations in 2006, has a manufacturing facility and warehouse in Mumbai, and two warehouses in Delhi. Indian operations contribute 10 per cent of this Italian company's overall revenue. Earlier, Sanjoy Chakrabarty, Managing Director, Soilmec India, told Projectmonitor that the parent company was providing ground engineering solutions for the past 40 years and was specialised in hydraulic rotary rigs (mounted on crawler units) and crane mounted rigs. It was also specialised in hydraulic and cable grabs to customer specification. Hence, the company would like to consolidate its position in India. "Since ground piling is still a rare concept in India and has not picked up well due to underground electricity lines, water piping etc., Soilmec has attained a 55 per cent market share in piling rigs alone in the market. The company is eyeing the Indian market in a big way because customers have become quality conscious and are buying overseas equipment," Chakrabarty added. Soilmec India has a huge market in eastern India, largely due to coal and mining activities, and has sold over 200 piling rigs so far. The company is eyeing the business potential in tunnel foundation work as it has the necessary equipment. |
