World Bank assistance sought for Cauvery project

The Tamil Nadu Government is likely to ask for financial assistance from the World Bank for modernisation of the Cauvery project at an estimated cost of Rs 5,500 crore.

The flood-control project costing Rs 253 crore involves strengthening of the bunds and construction of permanent protective structures along the Cauvery, Coleroon and other rivers in Tiruchirapalli, Karur and Ariyalur districts. The project is expected to be completed in a span of 18 months.

According to sources, the widening of the road over-bridge across the Kudamuritti river on the Vayalur road in Tiruchiraplli, had been entrusted with the Highways Department and work on the other components is likely to commence soon.
