The MMRDA is expected to build dams on the rivers Shai in Thane and Poshir in Raigad (Maharashtra).
Work on a feasibility study for the dam on the Shai has begun. The project envisages an investment of Rs 1,620 crore. Initially, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) proposed to develop the project but considering the project financially unviable and it handed over the project to the State government. Now, the MMRDA will build the dam with the help of the state irrigation department.
The dam will have a capacity of 940 million ltrs a day. The project is aimed at providing water to Thane, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Ambernath and Badlapur.
The dam on the Poshi is to be built in Karjat taluka and the project is slated to be completed by 2010. The dam will feed areas such as Khopoli, Karjat and Matheran.
