The Central Water Commission (CWC) has reportedly sanctioned the revised cost estimates of four multi-purpose projects in Orissa. These projects are Kanpur Irrigation project, Upper Indravati Extension project, Lower Indra Irrigation project and Subernarekha Irrigation project.
The Kanpur Irrigation project cost has been revised to Rs 1,067.51 crore without any change in the scope of the project work. The earlier project cost was Rs 428.32 crore. It is expected to irrigate 47,709 ha annually and envisage construction of 3,460 mtrs long earthern dam across river Baitarani.
Similarly, the CWC has given its nod for the revised cost estimates of Upper Indravati Extension project. However, the revised cost of the project has been finalised at 564.77 crore. The proposed project is a continuation of the old Indravati project located in Kalahandi-Balangir-Koraput region of the state. The original extension proposal was approved by the Planning Commission in March 2003 with an estimated investment of Rs 137.67 crore.
Besides, the cost of the Lower Indra Irrigation project has been revised at Rs 1,182.23 crore from Rs 521.13 crore. It is expected to irrigate about 38,870 ha annually. The initial cost of the project was estimated at Rs 211.7 crore in 1999 when it was first cleared by the Planning Commission.
The Subernarekha Irrigation project, which is an inter-state project between Orissa, Jharkhand and West Bengal, also got a go ahead from CWC for cost revision. The revised cost has been finalised at Rs 4,049.93 crore including the share cost of Rs 817.52 crore to be borne by Orissa for works to be taken up in Jharkhand.
