In a move to combat food adulteration, the Uttar Pradesh government has sanctioned setting up of an independent department of food and medical administration. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati, has also directed the setting up of an intelligence and raiding units under the department.
She has also put forth the plan of setting up a helpline for people to launch their complaints. The authority of the department has been handed over to the Principal Secretary, tax and registration, Desh Dipak Verma as additional charge. A commissioner and two joint directors, trained inspectors would also be posted in the department and a DIG level officer would be posted for heading the intelligence unit.
