Maharashtra in cautious mode, to cancel contracts awarded to Maytas. Maybe it is sheer panic, or maybe it is a case of undoing the wrong, the state government has asked the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) to cancel all the contracts it had given to Maytas Infra, a company run by Satyam founder B Ramalinga Raju' son, for modernisation of the power supply network.

Chief minister Ashok Chavan on Wednesday said the MSEB has been instructed to withdraw all the contracts given to Maytas Infra. "We don't want to take any chances. The government has asked the MSEB to call for fresh tenders for all the works given to Maytas earlier," he said.

TOI had reported on January 14 that civil contracts worth Rs 400 crore had been awarded to Maytas Infra, mostly pertaining to upgrading the worn-out power distribution network in the state. Maytas was supposed to replace old transformers, lay new distribution lines and commission new sub-stations.

Most of the contracts bagged by Maytas were in the backward regions of Marathwada and Vidarbha. It got work orders to overhaul the power supply network and take electricity to farms in Ahmednagar, Beed, Degloor in Nanded district, Amravati and Buldhana districts.

The state, however, did not want to take any chances as it felt that the troubled Maytas might not be able to finish upgrading the power supply network in these backward areas-which faced a host of problems-on time. Maytas was supposed to finish the work in a year's time after getting the contracts in June 2008.
