The Tamil Nadu Government proposes to set up five market complexes with cold-storage facilities in the state.
The market complexes are to come up at Pongalur, Hosur, Odaipatti, Krishnagiri and Pattukottai at a cost of Rs 1 crore each. A flower auction centre is being set up at Kavalkinaru in Tirunelveli district at a cost of Rs.1.63 crore.
The State Government has offered various incentives for creating infrastructure facilities at terminal markets expected to come up in Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore for processing, storing and marketing perishables such as fruits and vegetables with an investment of over Rs 100 crore. They are likely to come up in PPP mode. The Union Government has asked the state to implement the project on subsidy basis instead of equity basis. Tamil Nadu is likely to get subsidy of Rs 40 crore.
