The Union Ministry of Coal (MoC) may retrieve the Tara coal block allotted to Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corporation (CMDC) on account of poor progress towards the development of the block.

According to the ministry, CMDC has yet to obtain the forest, environment clearances and mining lease, and complete the land acquisition process, since the mine was allotted during the year 2003.

The MoC has expressed displeasure due to the hitches in land acquisition, given the fact that the updated rehabilitation and resettlement plan, an important component of the land acquisition process, has already been approved by the Chhattisgarh government.

The company has however, committed to commence production by December 2009, fearing the ministry's decision.
