Shree Cement Ltd, on March 24, 2009, commissioned its clinker manufacturing unit (No.7) of 1 million tpa capacity at Bangur city, Ras, in Pali district of Rajasthan. The project was executed in 367 days (around 12 months) as against the industry standard of 21 months, making it a world record.

Projectmonitor interacted with the plant and technology supplier KHD Humboldt Wedag GmbH of Germany whose Indian outfit KHD Humboldt Wedag India Pvt. Ltd achieved the feat, closely working with the project team of Shree Cement Ltd.

Discussing the achievement, KHD officials said that several actions were responsible for the record commissioning that came as a surprise to most industry analysts. To begin with, some of the equipment for the raw mill and coal mill, around 97 tonnes, were airlifted directly from Germany instead of using the conventional sea route. This logistical aspect was an unprecedented move in the cement industry. Through meticulous planning, equipments were delivered in 7-11 months, contributing to a drastic cut in gestation period. The plant erection work was completed in a mere six months, by the efforts of the Shree Cement project team, Humboldt officials noted.  For instance, they said, the six-stage pre-heater package was executed in just eight months.

“Initially the plant was targeted to be commissioned in 15 months which industry experts believed to be non-viable,  as the global benchmark for the erection and commissioning of such a plant is 21 months,” Martin Gierse, President, KHD Humboldt Wedag India, said in an email exchange.

When asked if the project would define a new paradigm in the world cement industry, Gierse asserted, “Definitely, with the commissioning of Shree Line VII, records have already been set for KHD and Shree Cement. This achievement has become a learning experience for other entrepreneurs who are looking for faster implementation of projects under the current business environment.”

KHD and Shree Cement have had a long-standing partnership. The new line is the fifth identical line executed by Humboldt Wedag India and Shree Cement at the same location. KHD has been a leading technology supplier to the Indian cement industry, Gierse noted, with major clients like Grasim Industries, Jaypee Cement, Orient Cement and Dalmia Cement, apart from Shree. Having recently commissioned two 8,000 tpd clinkerisation plants in India, KHD Humboldt Wedag is also supplying India's first 10,000 tpd plant. “These clinkerisation lines are the introduction of large capacities in India via KHD technology,” Gierse explained.
