The Union Government is likely to take the final decision on CIDCO's proposed international airport at Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra by early 2010 after IIT, Mumbai, completes a comprehensive study on the environmental impact of the project in the region including a public hearing.
Before execution of work on the airport, details of environmentally sensitive places, land acquisition status, rehabilitation of communities and villages and current status of such activities, are to be studied by the project panel. Apart from this, IIT is likely to seek details of impact of sea level rise by the project in the next 100 years.
So far, the government has only approved the term of reference (ToR) for its environmental impact assessment that includes public hearing. Besides, the project promoter CIDCO has been asked to conduct a public hearing as mandated by the law. The government has handed out a long list of ToR to CIDCO to complete before seeking approval for the project.
The proposed airport to be developed over 1,615 ha and having a total area of 2,800 ha is likely to come up near Panvel with an investment of Rs 10,000 crore.
